Trumpet Help

Not to toot my own horn, but I toot my own horn. And it's a sucky horn. And I'm in the market for a new one. And I have no clue where to begin. If any of you kids have any good advice on selecting a good trumpet to purchase, please give it to me.

 

Just go to any local music shop and ask for some advice. Big places are decent like Guitar Center, but you will actually have more luck in smaller, family owned shops.

 

I don't want to ask for help from any store, as their end goal will ultimately be to get the most money possible out of me.

 

Local, family owned stores will give you a fair price for what you're buying because they're just happy to have your business. Also, if you continue to use their business they will do more for you in return (better deals, hold things for you while you get the money, tell you about better deals than what you're looking at, etc.)

 

Steal a trumpet from a trumpeter at buckingham palace.

 

In all honesty he's right, when I wanted a new bass I went to local places. It's amazing how awesome those store owners are, they let me fiddle around with whatever I wanted and talked to me a lot.

 

Look around, some places sell cheaper plastic ones, i tried a trombone one, and that sound good, and are quite cheap.

 

Experience will always vary widely with small outfits. Large or small, the overriding motivation is profit, but large places tend to be more competitive on price, because they can rely on sales volume and economy of scale.

I don't have any advice specific to trumpets, but as someone who has shopped for guitar and flute, I suggest you do some preliminary internet research, looking at reviews and general pricing, then walk into a shop with that knowledge. You should then be able to tell if the person is giving you quality advice and reasonable prices.

 

Is there a Music&Arts or Milano's store anywhere? If so, go to those stores, they have trumpets (hopefully).
