i have never once stated "my group" is more oppressed than others. where are you getting this from??

my only point here is that we deserve to make a point in supporting each other. queer people see these type of hate crimes that generate shame within themselves and it's important that we are supporting one another in reminding ourselves we deserve to exist.

That is a rather dim view of yourselves if you need to remind yourself you deserve to exist. Perhaps that is part of the problem as well? Wouldn't reminding yourselves that the world is indeed, full of ignorant closed minded people be a much more productive route?

Well you can hardly have an "Anti Muslim" month, can you? Or perhaps an "Anti Christian" month. That would literally reverse things.

we have to remind ourselves because often we are told we don't deserve to. just like many other aspects of my identity, not just this part. we have to support one another saying it's ok to be this way when so much of the world tells us it's not.

that's a really negative worldview, it's not really a headspace i desire to spend my entire life in. that's a personal thing, though

i dont really participate or feel the need for pride, but i did when i was younger when so many of the people around me didn't support me. young queers especially need this kind of support and reminders or their validity.

    Please read my posts.
This sounds a lot harsher than I want it to, and I blame the internet for that, but why do you deserve this?

I have no issues with self-pride, but it seems like all these history months, and special days for groups of people is against the very thing they are seeking - Pure and simple equality. It seems a better option, to me, to treat everyone exactly the same, because everything else about them other than being human is not relevant.

I was a poor kid growing up, and I got teased relentlessly - I had two options, take stock in what stupid people are saying, or to realize that it really doesn't matter and their words mean nothing. It just seems like overall, people would opt towards the second one, it's a really nice viewpoint.

    Then ignore them.

Let me share a little story. From 4th through 8th grade, I had no friends to speak of. Most of my memories from that time involving other people (mostly through Boy Scouts, ironically enough) are of them calling me stupid, annoying, a retard, etc. I ignored them, and I laughed inside every time, because I knew they were wrong (except for the annoying part. Sometimes, I deserved that.) Now I'm not homeschooled any more, and I have friends (one of whom actually can call me stupid, [and does], but I don't care, because, you know, friends.), and I'm not retarded.

in a world that systemically oppresses people of certain identities, these people deserve to know they have a community that loves and respects them

it's unfortunate to hear about your bullying — we can find common ground there. you deserve love and acceptance too, but remember there is an inherent difference between these microcosmic events of schoolyard bullying and the macrocosmic aspect of systemic oppression.

i think we are arguing semantics. although i thoroughly disagree with the idea of pride months for people who are not currently systemically oppressed (we don't have to get into that here, i dont really want to right now), this concept i preach of reminding one another of deserving to exist is in similar vein of support, i think it's just different language you and i are using.

not to mention what you're describing is a result of systemic oppression of the working class — something i experience as well and is far greater than any aspect of my identity.

That isn't oppression, that is how life has been naturally since pre-history.

This is not equality. Equality is everyone is exactly the same, and worth exactly the same. No behavior should be afford to one group over any other group, period. There are no circumstances, or justifications that make it anything but inequality.

It happens to almost everyone at some point or another.
There is no systematic oppression of gays in the U.S. (where the month would be)
Why? Have I done anything to? I mean, I'm obviously pretty great, but you can't have known that. :p
Yeah. I didn't have anyone like me to talk to, because it wasn't schoolyard, because I was homeschooled.

Yeah, systemic oppression is definitely the greater of the two evils, because it affects people on a massive scale,
But said systemic oppression doesn't exist in the U.S.

If we look at this on a national scale: There is no systemic oppression in the U.S.
If we look at this on a global scale: Almost every single group is systemically oppressed somewhere, with the exclusion of men and straights.

What about having a pedophile pride month?
No, I'm not comparing gays to pedophiles.
But with that reasoning, well, pedophiles cannot help being sexually attracted to children. Ain't their fault, the world tells them it's bad and that they don't deserve to live.
So, would you support a pedophile pride month?

What about a Catholic Pride Month? I'm Catholic, it's part of my identity, I'm proud of it, but sometimes people make me feel like I'm worthless because of it. Should I get a pride month for that? Traditionally, Christians have been oppressed. At least, under the Romans they were. Catholics specifically were hunted by the KKK too. So, would you be in support of this too?

Aside from that, I feel that the name encompasses a different issue altogether:
Why not call it Gay History Month or something, instead? Gay Pride is much more... I don't know the word for it. Exclusionary? The name itself rubs people the wrong way - instead of implying celebration of overcoming difficult obstacles, it centers more on the 'gay' aspect of it.

i read it, don't care, there is no comparing to people raping children and two people loving another person

any amount of that rhetoric is disgusting and i dont know why you would ever think it's appropriate

    I don't understand.
Let me link you to a dictionary.
    http://www.dictionary.com/browse/pedophile

Read the definition of a pedophile, and thank you for proving my point about them being ostracized.

Pedophilia is a state of existence, like being gay, bipolar, ADHD, liking BDSM, whatever. You are being extremely hypocritical if you find these people disgusting for a tendency that they cannot help.

Pedophiles don't necessarily rape children. And who are you to deny them their sexuality?

So it's all about accepting people for who they really are, until you disagree with who they are? I mean, they can't help it, and almost all of them at least try to live good lives, and many succeed.

    I will.
I will refuse to be bigoted against someone who can't help what they feel. Is that wrong?

Because paedophilia is classed as a mental-illness. Whereas homosexuality is not.

    http://www.helping-people.info/articles/dsm.htm

Because we don't need to raise awareness for Catholics or whites. They're not oppressed worldwide, and they don't struggle for equal-rights in many countries. Gays still do.

Surely, you guys know why we've had similar events for women and not for men throughout the last century or so? If you think a 'Gay Pride' parade is literally only about taking pride in one's own sexuality, I believe there's a lot of nuance that's not being taken into account. Wikipedia will probably do a better job than I can here.

By his criteria, however, pedophile pride month should also be fine.
Besides that, is it not okay for these people to feel okay about themselves? Cant they be proud of their struggles? What about those who are bipolar?
What is the difference? I still fail to see it.
