Lots of misinformation on this thread....

Coming from someone that will be a pharmacist in a year all I can tell you is your prescription pain killers are much worse than marijuana. More addiction, many overdoses, but hey, the drug companies make their money. I'm not saying Oxycodone/Hydrocodone/Morphine/Hydromorphone/Fentanyl are bad in all cases. The drugs do have practical uses but they are heavily abused and there is certainly an epidemic in the United States concerning opioid addiction.

I witnessed first hand a 23 year old girl's death because she OD'd on her benzodiazepines (not painkillers but also an abused drug class) in the ICU when on rounds. I got to witness plenty of other OD related deaths due to opioids and illicit drugs like heroin, and cocaine. Saw someone on their death bed due to liver cirrhosis because they couldn't put alcohol down (oh but the government makes so much tax revenue from alcohol). Ironically I never saw someone in the hospital due to marijuana....

Honestly why not legalize it, tax the hell out of it and use that money for something useful. Maybe building trains that aren't 40 years behind other developed nations? More money for federal programs and less money in the hands of the cartels? I'll take that any day of the week.

Oh and yes, I smoke the marijuana. It has killed so many brain cells that I'm easily able to go through pharmacy school and I'm planning on going to medical school to be a surgeon.

Pot isn't that bad. We grow plants in it at my house. I don't see what's wrong with it. I also don't see how it's addictive.

    Jk,
But, I'm not for legalization of weeds. I mean they are all over our backyards and they destroy our gardens. What is wrong with them!

    But seriously,
I'm all for the legalization of marijuana. There is nothing that bad about it. In fact, I think we should ban alcohol because it causes more deaths each year than marijauna. Alcohol is the cause of around 88,000 deaths each year yet nearly nobody dies from smoking pot (There are some but it's not from ODing on pot). I don't plan on smoking lettuce in the future but I don't see why all the drug money is going to illegal drug trade when it should be going to pot businesses.

I want murder to be legal, because either way people are going to do it.

But if you murder somebody you are hurting someone other than yourself, If I smoke weed, even if it was harmful, it would ultimately only be harming myself.

Even so, where do you usually smoke weed? its usually in the privacy of your home of with a bunch of like minded people who are all choosing to potentially harm themselves, my main point is if consenting adults want to engage in an activity thats only going to harm consenting people theres no reason why anyone should intervene. Also, the article says "More research is needed to determine if similar health effects could be seen in humans."

True, but In lots of cases you smoke it with your friends not just at home. And it leaves a bad smell so you'd have to do it outside if you did in my own opinion.

If it were legal I wouldn't have to hit 3-4 people up asking if they have any to sell, plus I'd rather my money go toward helping improving the community/state than to my friends who will just spend it on more weed eventually making cartels and criminal organizations alike more money.

Chemotherapy can be medically prescribed. It's terrible for your health.
In perhaps a more accurate comparison: Opiates are bad for you (especially for your liver), but they can also be medically prescribed. All you need to be able to prescribe something is to show that it can offer a health tradeoff that could possibly be beneficial (pain relief for liver damage), and it probably won't kill you.

Heh, and here we come to the second point about prescriptions: Doctors used to prescribe alcohol all the time. Medicinal Alcohol | Temperance & Prohibition

If we weren't a welfare state (I'm talking about America here) then I would say, go ahead. I think medical marijuana is a good thing. Smoking just to smoke? No. When you do drugs and can't get a job, we pay for your unemployment. When you smoke and do other drugs, we pay for your medical bills. It does effect society as a whole and it is EVERYONES business, not just the users.

    Wtf.
Do marijuana smokers have higher unemployment rates? (In states where its legal, the numbers are irrelevant when its illegal)

No I mean supply the evidence to back up your claims.

(In states where weed is legal) are potheads more likely to be on welfare?

Yes, legalize it and tax it.

Personally? Couldn't care less, I'm a white male and I've carried lots and lots of illegal marijuana with me and never have I been stopped once. Even if I did my city has decriminalized it so the consequence is a $25 ticket.

I mean the data exclusively from states where marijuana is legal. As has been covered before, it being illegal leads it to be a gateway drug, and the people who use it tend to be criminals or lackeys, Data coming from states where its illegal are irrelevant.
