Can energy be destroyed?

Came up in global, decided to put it down here.

Title says it all. Discuss.

 

Is this supposed to be a debate? Because there is one answer and the answer is no... Scientifically energy can not be destroyed, boom end of "debate".

 

Energy can not be created or destroyed - only transferred from one type of energy to another

 

It's not a debate, it's a fact proven by science that it cannot be destroyed.

 

The law of thermodynamics says no.

However, there are still new things we are learning about how energy and matter relate to each other. Scientists were able to crash quarks into each other and create something 200x the original mass. It's like shooting two marbles at each other and ending up with a bowling ball. The only explanation I can think of about this is that energy was used to create matter.

So in reality, there's still stuff we don't know about how energy is conserved. So your question technically can't be answered yet.

From what we know now, no, it can't be destroyed, however, we do know that there's a conversion from mass to energy E=mc^2, and that could (I guess) go backwards somehow... Which would mean that energy can become matter, and matter can again become energy.

 

If you count as e=mc^2 technically yes... But, it can be converted back stating matter is a form of energy, that's like saying if I freeze water, it is no longer H2O
