I wanted to hear your opinions on the benefits and drawbacks of space exploration.

 

With the likelyhood of 5,000,000,000,000 dollar asteroids in near earth orbit that we could reasonably mine, i say its definitely worth it . However this could easily crash the prices of many rare and valuable minerals like platinum and gold. While there may be initial damage to the earthly mining industry and some job loss, in the long run it will make many things cheaper and more abundant and create a variety of jobs in the industry. Overall economically i think its worth it not to mention the environmental benefits of getting rid of earthbound mines. Each decent sized asteroid could equal the entire mineral output of earth atm.

Side note, in america its legal to park a 1km+ asterioid (ability to destroy a metropolitain area and cause significant reigonal damage) in low earth orbit and mine it and legally own the metals however you cant claim the asteroid meaning other people could mine it at the same time as you.

 

To much traffic near the cape when launches happen

 

The cape isnt even that great a location to launch from, imo they should launch from closer to the equator, maybe french guyana (france)

I'm a big supporter of space exploration.
Humans evolved in Africa, explored all of Europe and Asia and walked to the Americas. We have a need to explore and expand, its part of human nature

Space exploration is key to further advancements, and sooner or later we must find a new planet to live on anyhow. Plus now that Boeing, SpaceX, and other companies are battling it out to offer the best and cheapest launches, there is incentive to improve.

That was a joke. I’m not sure if the political views of these astronauts (tho I heard NASA is a fairly Liberal organization). However, they are attempting to make space liveable.
