Introduction: Hello everyone, my name is Josh, but most of you will probably know me as Vampire_Man_32. I am 15 years old and live in Adelaide, Australia. In my spare time I enjoy playing soccer and field hockey, watching YouTube videos, programming, and playing MeepCraft. I first joined MeepCraft in July 2012 and have been playing somewhat consistently ever since.
I am currently finishing up my second year of high school (year nine). One of my school values is opportunity and the thinking behind it is that we should take up every opportunity that we get in our schooling years. I think that this value is really important and this year I have been a part of year 8 and 9 boys volleyball team and open mixed hockey team, I have made my own futsal team and entered into the year 8-10 school tournament, signed up for a trip to Cambodia and Laos late next year and joined the school’s pedal prix team. In my last school I was also a member of the pedal prix team, cricket team, soccer team and was a leader of the Student Council.
Outside of school, perhaps my most favourite hobby is to play field hockey. I currently play for one of the most successful clubs in Adelaide in the U18 and Open Div3 teams. I have also been selected for a training squad every Monday and Friday evening as a pathway into the U15 and U18 state teams.

Please describe your experience as a developer. I first started to code in August last year when I started a Digital Technology class at school. In that class we were learning Python with the end goal of making a game using Pygame. I was very interested in making my own game and worked for hours after school to make the game that I wanted. After hours of hard work, I got an A+ for my game and it was featured in the school magazine.
Since then I ventured into programming in python using sockets and successfully made a simple multiplayer shooting based game. I then decided to start learning how to make websites and started looking at HTML and JavaScript, which opened up a whole new range of games and applications that I could make. A few months later, I started to look into Java and the Bukkit API which is when I started making plugins for Minecraft.
Some of the first plugins that I ever made were a Spleef and TntRun plugin which I was very proud of, along with a plugin for player ranks and chat based features. Recently, I have made another improved Spleef plugin, a simple pets plugin and a plugin for party chat which allows players to create their own chat groups.
I have always found that I have been able to quickly pick up concepts and ideas in programming and feel that this would be one of my greatest strengths as a tech. Even if I don’t understand something, it is so easy to find help on the internet – there are so many resources out there! I think that I demonstrated this the best by finishing my first Java project and Bukkit plugin – a spleef game – about an hour or so after I first started experimenting with the language and API.

What programming languages are you familiar with? I am familiar with Python, Javascript and Java. I can easily learn other languages if need be, although I’m believe that a Tech only needs to work with Java.

What are you most proud of as your work as a developer? The work that I am proudest of would have to be a chrome extension that I made for fellow students at my school. At school we use a website called DayMap to keep track of our class and assessments. DayMap had rolled out a new update which had changed its interface drastically. My extension changed the interface so that class notes and homework made by teachers were shown on the front page again, along with new features such as the ability for students to write and save notes on the home page and desktop alerts 15 and 5 minutes prior to the start of a new class.

How do you plan to enrich the experience of MeepCraft with your development contributions? As a tech, my main goal would be to improve our minigames and secondary features – skywars, infected, kitpvp, ctf, boomo and halo – and possibly help create more. I feel that these areas show the greatest room for improvement on our server and that they have the potential to draw more players to MeepCraft. As a secondary goal I would like to help add more donor features (gadgets, etc.), as after the EULA took effect I feel that the donor ranks aren’t really worth it anymore.

I was a bit stuck on my digital tech assignment in javascript and you came on ts and helped me out a lot, you explained the stuff really well and know what you're talking about.
We have a Newcastle Jets supporter on the staff team and we need to get a better balance I'm not sure if you could balance out this though.

I don't know anything about developing except some HTML so I can't judge, but I think you'd make a good developer based on the application. However, if you are to be paid, then that's a different story.

Can you describe the position you would like or work you imagine yourself doing for meep?

 

Thanks for replying, and as I mentioned in my app, I feel that I could help the most by improving meepcraft's secondary features - mostly minigames and donor perks. I have had a look on trello and I think that there are a lot of bug fixes and additions in this area that I would be able to implement. I am able to do other work if it is required of me, I just feel that I would be most comfortable in this area.
