I dunno. Under the law, white privilege doesn't exist...everyone's equal under the law. However, culturally, it definitely is a thing.
I have a black friend who was pulled over one night for driving a new BMW in a bad neighborhood. Police kept insisting the car was stolen, and arrested him and threw him into the back of a police cruiser. The car was not stolen; it was his, and his dad bought it for him a month ago. He only got out of trouble when he told the police that the registration was in the glovebox (he tried to get it out at first but the policeman told him to stop reaching for a gun).
Police also are less likely to cut African-Americans or Latinos slack than other ethnic groups. I don't think it's necessarily a conscious thing that police officers are doing on purpose, but it's probably there. Similarly, whites are more likely to land a job or get a promotion than minorities with the same qualifications. While white privilege isn't something we necessarily need to create legislation for, it's something to be aware of, as it's subtly hanging around our culture. I will say that it's nowhere near as influential as some people would make you believe, though. -

what is the thinking?
My own personal thinking is that its based of a bunch of correlation, but its not very concrete. I think that because black people that come from families with 2 parents have roughly the same success rates, I think it comes down more to personal choices rather than some societal structure. No amount of micro agressions is going to make a black man sleep with a black woman and then leave her to raise the child, Its about personal responsibility, if you leave your child to be raised by a single mother, your child is poor because of you, not white people.Last edited: May 5, 2017cooey, MyGmail, FamousZAmos and 1 other person like this.
