So if I say mean hurtful things to you and taunt and insult you in real life, you're self-victimizing because you can walk away from me?

    okay

    ...or phone screens. ;)

Anyway, I agree with @TheNachoLife, it's real. Doesn't matter if it's physical, verbal, or cyber, if you're damaging someone's feelings over and over again, it's bullying. And doing that over a computer screen [or phone screen] is just as bad as doing it in real life.

Yes, cyberbullying is real, but I think what dwarf is trying to say is that more often than not, its exaggerated. I pulled up a googke image search for "cyberbullying texts," and what I found was just plain dumb.

Nope, because in real life I don't have the choice to mute you. You can follow me around IRL. Also frequently, I don't have the option to leave whatever platform you are bullying me on (school, organized sports).
Not at all, using a public figure as an example is misleading because the "cyber bullying" most people deal with isn't at all similar to the mob mentality that Markipliers GF would deal with.
Bullying has intense psychological consequences on the victims, if you feel like you are being "bullied" and theres no other way, deleting an app is a small price to pay to save your mental stability

Again, I'm not talking about being stalked, swatted, doxed, or blackmailed.

So do people have to quit the game or whatever they're doing just to escape the bully?

People shouldn't have to quit doing what they love just to "get away" from a bully.

(edit: If you're going to reply with "mute them", what if you can't mute people on the game you love, not easy to just say "find a new hobby", people shouldn't have to do that)

Those are minor things, You can't just say Cyber-bullying is not real because of minor bullying, think of the major bullying. This can damage a persons self-esteem and can actually lead to much worse things.

    For a real response -

Depending on what social group your in, and by that I mean race, sexuality, disabled or not, etc, bullying happens within 25% of people. Some more specific groups are bullied more, such as LGBT, More heavy-set people, and disabled people, going up to 75% of people. I'm unsure whether or not these stats mean specifically either physical, cyber, or in general.

Personally, I think most of this problem is largely within the parents and other adults involved in a kid's life. a lot of kids arent taught as much now how to actually be a nice functioning member of society, lol. My dad would kick my ass if he ever saw me pulling stuff like that, especially for reasons like race or sexuality. But problems go ignored because god, people today are so LAZY.
    SO. L AZ Y.

If people would step up and do something about the problem, monitor their children, people notify the parents, the "bullying" would go down.

But that's not going to happen.

So in reality, it's up to the said victims to actually stand up and refuse to be bullied, whether that's physically by learning self defense, or by IGNORING THE PERSON.
    Youdonotneeedamutebuttontoignoresomeone.
Your problems won't magically go away. Life is tough. You can rule it, let yourself be ruled. People have two choices. I will either let this happen, or I won't. And I understand sometimes it's not that simple. But a lot of times, it is. And when we can fix a lot of times, then we can fix the fewer times. It's a process and it's not something that happens by spreading a hashtag on the internet.

If you want something done, you don't sit around and go #getitdone and put a filter on your facebook profile picture and wave a weird flag 90% of people don't know what it stand for and go whooooo I'm solving problems!
No. Help solve the problems. Stand up for yourself and your own. And just, ffs, be kind to your neighbor as they are kind to you.

What some people seem to forget is that a lot of cyber bullying can also directly translate to real life. No, they aren't saying mean things straight to your face, but what's said about you online can and most likely will directly impact the way others see you. Even though you yourself may have the ability to close your computer and avoid that situation, it's nearly impossible to avoid everyone around you in real life who now shares that negative opinion of you and still maintain a proper style of living.

Now let's say that the bullying has no connection to your real life, for example being bullied on minecraft. For starters, would you walk away from all your friends here on meep just because 1 person is bullying you (assuming none of the rules were in place like a lot of places on the internet)? Personally, I wouldn't. One bully for me wouldn't be enough to drive me away from my other friends. Unfortunately, that's not the case for everyone. Some people would not be able to deal with that bully, and would leave the server entirely. Think of the potential people you might never have met if that were allowed. We are lucky to have a community that has 0 tolerance towards bullying. Then there are those who despite the bully, would continue to play on meep, because of how much they enjoyed coming on and seeing their friends each day, but deep down would still feel the impact of what's being said. Sometimes, there is no escaping the bully.

Overall, I think that people need to understand that what's bullying for one, might not be bullying to another. Just because you yourself wouldn't have cared about that one person calling you names, doesn't mean that another person will see it the same way. You can't "chose" not to be impacted by what another person is saying, and with how integrated the internet has become to our society, "the internet is not the place for you" is not a good argument.

Cyber bullying is very real, and can cause major damage to others self-esteem and overall quality of life.

I chuckled at a couple of these. These pictures were clearly made by older people who can barely even grasp what "the social networking" is.

I don't think you can say cyber bullying isn't a thing just because its preventable.

I know, i'm just great like that.

So here's where I'll actually add to this :p it took a bit of thought because when you said that I was kinda confused and didn't know what to say to it, but @metr0n0me brought up the one flaw in your argument. Bullying online, while can't exactly physically harm you (unless they mean harmful intent and know you in real life which I'll get to in a moment.) it can mean harm to your self-confidence, individuality, or even the activities you do. To me, cyber bullying has this effect on you to where eventually, you feel like you aren't wanted, needed, or a part of anything. It can be direct, indirect, or straightforward to the point.

I used to be cyber-bullied pretty often when I was like 12 or 13 because of my voice, and the fact that some pictures on my account were said to make me seem "fat". This hurt my self-confidence a lot, and while I've mostly gotten past it, it's still pretty hard to gain back, what you think you've lost. Now many people can say "man up" or "grow up" but the point here is that it effects everyone differently, which you say cyber-bullying isn't real because you can just ignore it, walk away, and be the "bigger person" but the fact herein lies that some people can't walk away from that. When I first came on here, in fact, a lot of people thought I was gay, or a girl, because of my voice. For a long time I didn't want to come on team speak and talk because I was really shy of how a lot of people would react, and while it stills sounds pretty womanly, a lot of people have grown to accept me for that, and I'm no longer shy of it.

It is for sure not that someone is "Lazy" that they refuse to stand up to someone. It's the fear that in the end they'll get even more hurt, sometimes you can't just ignore someone, for example if they have naked pictures of you, information that would hurt your credibility, or make you lose friends. Bullying won't go down, for me at least I don't believe it will. There will always be that one person who has malicious intent because of something that happened to them, because the bully has usually been bullied before, either by their parents, by people, or by siblings. You can go "if" or "when" all day but that won't change anything, what will change something is if you lend your friendship, heart, and help to someone and say that you're there for them. While this may be a small number, this has worked like 40% of the time for me in order to make the person step up and tell someone, and even if it's you. you are willing to be there for them and help them against it, tell a principal, teacher, or even the police if it's severe. That's what's going to change this, not by saying "oh its not real because its all in how you perceive it xdxd!!!" or saying "if only parents were better parents" You need to be a leader for someone, their rock, I'm blessed to have friends I know won't ever hurt me, and I haven't been cyberbullied in a long time because yes, i've gotten so much stronger, mostly because of dealing with people on this server or people over text message.

    Be the change.

    Thank you.

Thing is, people do have naked pictures of me. Quite a few of them actually. at least 2 of them have even participated in this debate. And I have been blackmailed about it.
YOu know what I say back?
    "ok"
And not a single thing has been done c':
In the many many times I've been harassed and blackmailed or wtfever
    not a damn thing
this includes on this server and otherwise
because bullies stop being bullies when they stop receiving attention.

If something someone says makes you lose a friend, they werent really your friend anyways LOL. What kind of one sided friendship is that?

This whole bloody protest and #stopbullying!!!!! is almost encouraging it. It's bringing into a very large and obvious view. People see it and get attention. Even negative attention is good attention to these people

I'm gonna be real blunt - people are an ass to you because you react, and they think it's funny. Once you stop responding or you don't get angry, or you have the comment deleted and move on, it happens much less. As I think you yourself have experienced since you're a whole lot less reactive and defensive to negative posts about you than you used to be.

It happens less often because there's less reaction, so it's not as much fun. do you see? You even state that you're stronger now and it happens less.

and - I meant parents as in both parents of the bullies and victims. Parents should be there to stand up for their kid when they cant as well as teach the kid the right way to go. Parents should smack their kid silly when they find out little billy is being a giant jerk at school. Because that's not okay - thats what parents are for.

It wont disappear but it can go down, and it can stay the same, and it can go up, it depends on how people react to the situation. Handle it appropriately.

If you are getting bullied by getting called fat you think being a "Bigger Person" is gonna stop the bullying? (Protip, you're already the bigger person :))
No but fr it was a joke please don't feel cyber boolied
Then isn't that the persons problem? Its unreasonable to expect the entire internet to change just because you're sensitive. Now I'm not trying to say being sensitive is bad or anything and that people are wimps for getting offended, I just think it should be on you to keep your self confidence and stuff.
