Unless they're homeless veterans then you just tell them to go away and beg in an alleyway.

Okay I never said you were not working, I never said you were lazy and I never said you sat behind a computer screen all day. I was saying I dont get my information from news articles on the internet thats why I dont post many links. It was not a insult to please do not turn my words into insults.

I will certainly go back into my research to find you the links to the sources I used. I will go back into my history after I reply to everyone. I will come back to this though.

Okay your taking what im saying and turning it around. Ill just post this video so you can understand what I am saying.

No veteran should ever be homeless, without insurance, without food, etc etc. Veterans 1st! then Americans!

@Deljikho No im not trolling. What im saying is y'all obviously get your information from the internet/ sources offline. This is why y'all can quickly find a link to a source, correct? Has nothing to do with being lazy.

I agree with some of the stuff she said, but it honestly seems unreasonable not to take support to help your child, who is hungry. She hasa strong mother, that's apparent, and it's good that her mother did so much to get herself and her family out of poverty, but this makes about no sense. It seems like pride, or something, was preventing her from seeking help, food, when her daughter had little to eat every day.
I do not know why you view poor people as people who choose to be poor, there are many people who work many hours a day and they still can't get enough money to support their family, to have adequate food and clothing. Kind of what metr0 said above, if you're born into a low income family, and have to work to support them once you can, you often can't afford to spend the time or the money to take the SAT's, or just study for school in general. Colleges won't accept you over more qualified candidates, and you will continue working low paying jobs. You don't have a lot of experience, so little well-paying jobs would hire you.
Or, why do you say that poor people will get iphones over other necessities? People, for the most part, do not do this. Where is the data for this?
People should work to get out of poverty, but sometimes just pure work is not enough, and you need other peoples' help.

Okay, I know she said her mother did not take government assistance. let me say I am 100% for the government helping families who actually need it. What I mean by people choosing to be poor is, not being able to properly support ones self. You can not have wifi, televisions and smart phones and not be poor. Someone who is poor is on the verge of death because they literally have nothing. I understand times can be tough and it may be hard to get back into the middle class area but to be poor and stay poor is a choice.

I'm fairly sure most poor families need it, why do you get the impression that everyone who is poor is just riding off of government assistance and is lazy? While I'm sure there are people who do that, I would doubt that they are a serious percentage. Most people do not want to stay poor, and work hard hours to get out of it. It's just how/when/if doesn't just depend on the person. The global/local economy, the people they meet, how much help they receive, and so on can determine when or if you get out of poverty. People don't choose to be poor, at least the vast majority don't. It's by circumstance they got there, and it might not be possible to get enough money to support their family well while they are.

It's not like as if you just think: "Hmm, I seem to be poor, if I work long and hard hours everything will get better and I won't be poor anymore."
While for some people it works, every single life is an individual case. Sometimes, working hard isn't enough. I'm not saying you should work (You most definitely should), I'm saying it's often not enough.

See I'm not saying that poor people shouldn't get jobs and should take welfare benefits from the government. I'm not.

There are certainly people who do that, and I really don't have respect for people who choose to abuse government benefits. Similarly, I have a lot of respect for people who brought themselves out of poverty by virtue of their own hard work, like Ms. Loesch's mom.

However, there are a lot of circumstances that go into being poor, and it's fallacious to apply a blanket statement "being poor is a choice."

Sure, you can choose to be poor, but it's substantially harder to choose not to be poor. Does this make sense?

@Qazini Im not saying poor people abuse government aid and are lazy. You can be poor can get out of poverty just like in the video. Many people are not willing to work jobs. Many people are not willing too do manual labor. A lot of people are not willing to clean house poop out of a stall. Does any of this make sense? If people stopped with this "I dont want to do more work then I have to" or "im too good for that job" then they wouldn't be poor. A homeless man is pretty capable of walking up to a farmer and saying, will you please hire me to clean horse poop from the stalls. 95% of farmers and ranchers would hire them. Working in the city? Go to a hotel and say "Will you hire me to clean" I mean go around, ask, do. Put forth the effort and wealth you shall find.

You need to have an address and phone number to put on the job application before people will hire you.

So if you're homeless, it's really difficult to get a job because, well, you have no address. Though many homeless people do have cheap phones they charge up in the library and use to fill out online job applications.

Also, being homeless is really conducive to mental illness. The instability of living on the streets and some of the things homeless people deal with lead to a really high rate of mental illness. It's then really tough to get help because nearly all homeless people are uninsured, and getting treatment is expensive. So mental disorders go untreated, which can further exacerbate issues.

Out of curiosity, what state do you live in?

Quick reminder for everyone in a debate, no matter how fervently you disagree with another's opinion, always respect their right to say it. No one will be allowed to attack the character of people involved, or make assumptions about lifestyle choices. Also remember claims must be backed up with sufficient evidence. Continuation of disregard for the Debates Forum rules will force staff to lock threads, and we really don't want to do that. Debates can accomplish a lot, as I have experienced firsthand. Exchange of information and views is an excellent way to broaden one's views, which is what many debates revolve around. Everyone comes with a different view, and they melt together to create something new. With that in mind, it is my hope that everyone may respect each other, and enjoy the debate. Thanks!
