What have they done such that others might appreciate them? As far as I know, not much.

Why does everyone insist on treating some groups differently from others? Isn't that the definition of inequality?

Its not an equality thing man its more of a "don't kill yourself" thing
The probability rates of depression and suicide in LGBT people is much higher than that of the general public so pride month exists to remind them that they shouldn't be ashamed of themselves

And its not like pride month is really a huge thing, its not affecting anyone who isn't a member of the community being celebrated

It means... What have they done to be appreciated? Why should I appreciate them? I accept that they're here, I really don't care, but what have they done so that I must let them know that

Okay, think of it like this.
You have 8 siblings, and all of them get a party on their birthday, except for you.

They aren't getting presents, dude. They aren't getting handouts, they'll set up their own parades with their own money and keep to themselves and have a good time. Also it would be more like you have 8 siblings and 1 of them is depressed and is told "good job" a bit more often than you.

I just don't see why its a big deal to you its not like its Christmas or anything, its more of an honorary month.

This is the dumbest discussion. It's just a month that a group of people who aren't hurting anybody have to celebrate and connect. If you don't like it, don't celebrate it. It doesn't affect you, or give you any disadvantages, so stop complaining.

I went to the Chicago gay pride parade today. Had an awesome time. It really reminded me why I enjoy going to them. It's a chance to just be you without people judging, and it's a chance to celebrate history and yes - equality. Nobody is trying to exclude anyone. It's just a chance to celebrate diversity.

For the record, I saw a ton of straight people at these parades (and they are more than welcome). It's not just a gay thing anymore. I was on the train headed to our final stop and, I swear, half the people on there were straight (mostly young) people going to the parade.

But... *so* many have already explained why.

Initially, you asked for reasons. Doggedly asking the same question, "Why do we need them?". Rather than tackling each answer.

After that, you moved onto advocating (on multiple occasions) for a Paedophile Pride Parade. (I think, trying to show some sort of double-standard. [Even though it seems pretty obvious to me as to why we shouldn't celebrate mental-illness.])

Now, you're asking for any reasons as to why we need them... again. (Or at least, why we ever need more than one)

At this point, you're not even arguing against the idea of a Gay Pride Parade. You're arguing against all National XXXX Month's and/or Pride Parades in general. There's nothing you've just said that couldn't be used to criticize 'National History Month'. Do you genuinely want to go on record and support the claim that blacks shouldn't have had any more than 1 pride day? Because it's the same principle in action there.

TL;DR -- We keep having them until gays have equal rights. At the very least, it's an opportunity for the maligned/closeted to come out and have fun. A congregation. You (more than most) should understand the value in that.

You've got a somewhat moderate Catholic, and a self-professed contrarian arguing against the idea of Gay Pride parades. Honestly, I think the rest of us would be best served if we let this thread die. "Don't feed the trolls" and all that.

Uh, no. No I'm not. I'm arguing against the idea of having one specifically for "Gay pride"
There's already a gay history month that entails everything that these people are saying gay pride month stands for. So, why do we need another one?

To explain why shains' explanation doesn't work.

    Two separate questions, really.

And not one gives me a reason that people should have 2 months to celebrate something they're supposedly born with.

I'm arguing against the idea that a gay pride month is needed. I never said anything about gay pride parades. I never argued AGAINST history months.
    IN FACT,
    Ta-daa.

Feel excluded from Gay Pride Month? Maybe you should celebrate Gay Pride Month.

Most people don't really celebrate LGBT history month. Everyone uses Pride Month. Honestly, they should be merged, but I think over time everyone will naturally forget about LGBT history month and celebrate only pride month.

    Did I ever say that?
Besides, why don't I celebrate how amazing it is to be gay, how equal they are (though they have their own pride month), how special they are (though they were born with it), how ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING it is to be gay! ./s
Look, I have it thrown in my face enough already from a bunch of teens with a case of the raging hormones.
I have been threatened to be expelled for not using the "right pronouns" in front of the "right people" (literally given a list, use 'he/him' in front of these people, and 'she/her' in front of these).
I have been told I have caused someone multiple panic attacks/suicide attempts because I said I DIDN'T CARE if they were gay.
I've had horrible experiences with LGBT people. So PLEASE excuse me if I don't give two flying flips that people celebrate something that I don't care about.
Disclaimer for the politically correct/those who assume I just obviously haven't met the right gay people, so few are like that, etc: I know a good number of very friendly, intelligent, LGBT people. But they don't flaunt it in my face, so I often forget, because I don't care.
I'm not upset about "feeling excluded"
I think it's silly that people feel the need to make two pride months for an intrinsic trait that they were born with, and that they find THIS the way to equality, drawing attention to themselves and having (two) months for their wonderful pride because they are just so oppressed and have unequal rights now, rather than shutting up about things now that they have equal rights.

Look at the racism going on today: People aren't helping by having "Black Lives Matter" movements. They're making it worse, are they not? Do those people not have a bad rep for stirring up trouble where there is none?
And what about SJWs? Don't people think that they're annoying, and instead of apathy towards different genders, people commonly throw jokes at "spacekin" and "tri-gendered pyrofox", because tumblrites don't shut up about it?

It's never helped to be high-and-mighty as you are right now. Why do you assume I don't celebrate gay pride month? Why do you assume I feel excluded? I just find it unnecessary and, well, not helpful to social integration at all.

That would work. But still, as I said elsewhere: I think it makes more sense to have a history month than a pride month.

    As to this prior post:
... This is the debate section. In this case, the question posed was:
If you don't like to discuss opinions, if you think that this is a dumb discussion, well, it's not hurting you, this is a place for people to celebrate differences of opinions and connect over a common love of debating. It doesn't affect you, or give you any disadvantages, so stop posting :)

We are "complaining" because we were asked what we thought. If you have an issue with that, you're in the wrong section of the forums.

So, when did I say I felt excluded? Pride in a group of people is in itself an exclusionary term.

    EDIT:
    Let me clarify.
When you say gay history, there's a point to the month. It's celebrating the accomplishments of those who fought for equal rights.
When you say gay pride, it's "Wow, I'm proud to be gay." In other words, "Wow, I'm proud to be born a certain way."
"Wow, I'm proud to be black." is much more exclusionary-sounding than celebrating a black history month.
It's the social implications and nuances of the words that make it so.

So are you going to march over to some bowling team in portland that just won a match because they are proud? Is a bowling team not a group of people?

No. Am I going to march over to a gay pride parade just because they are proud? No.
Am I going to discuss how I dislike the idea of a gay pride month on a debate forum that asks me to do so? Yes.
